AMC Network has picked up Disney+'s canceled 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea TV series, Nautilus after Disney announced in August that the series would not be moving forward.

The announcement came on the heels of CEO Bob Iger stating that the company would be looking to make its new streaming platform profitable.  In addition to canceling Nautilus, Disney also canceled its adaptation of The Spiderwick Chronicles. Both series had already wrapped filming, which surprised Disney fans.

The 10-part Nautilus series is a prequel series that follows Captain Nemo, from Jules Verne's beloved 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea.  Originally, Paramount produced Nautilus and sold the series to Disney+.

Nautilus will air in 2024 on AMC as well as on AMC+.

The synopsis for the series reads, "Nautilus tells the origin story of Captain Nemo: an Indian Prince robbed of his birthright and family, a prisoner of the East India Mercantile Company and a man bent on revenge against the forces that have taken everything from him."

Shazad Latif is starring as Nemo and is joined by Georgia Flood as Humility Lucas and Thierry Frémont as Gustave Benoit. The show also stars Pacharo Mzembe, Arlo Green, Tyrone Ngatai, Ling Cooper Tang, Andrew Shaw, Ashan Kumar, Céline Menville and Kayden Price rounding out the cast.

James Dormer writes and exec produced the series, with Michael Matthews serving as the lead director.  Johanna Devereaux, Chris Loveall, Colleen Woodcock and Daisy Gilbert are also listed as executive producers. The series was originally set up as a joint production between Moonriver TV and Severn Stories.

"Nautilus is a big, sweeping drama that is sure to appeal to fans of our Anne Rice Immortal Universe and other buzzy and fan-forward series like Orphan Black: Echoes," said Ben Davis, EVP of original programming for AMC Networks and AMC Studios. He continued, "We are looking forward to bringing it to AMC+ and AMC as a special television event next year."

In a joint statement, Moonriver TV and Severn Stories CEO Xavier Marchand and Anand Tucker stated, "We are so thrilled to present the epic adventures of Captain Nemo and his legendary submarine The Nautilus alongside the other incredible AMC universes. The series will take viewers on a breathtaking journey with Nemo and his crew, battling terrifying creatures and the dark forces of the British Empire.
