As Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount) informs us, the mission of the starship Enterprise is to "chart the stars, to push the boundaries of what is known and what is possible."
In the show's previous trailer, Pike seemed to have isolated himself and stepped away from his command of the starship Enterprise. As he rides a horse in a snowly wilderness, we hear someone trying to coax him to come back. As for why he's stepped away, it's anyone's guess at this point. Perhaps it has something to do with events involving the Discovery being forced to propel itself a thousand years into the future during the second season finale of Star Trek: Discovery, or something that will unfold during the first season.
Given that this show is going to be more standalone in nature unlike the serialized Discovery and Star Trek: Picard, it does't seem like it will be something hanging over the whole show. Either it will be dealt with in the first episode, or be a thread rather than a driving force of the season. All of that being said, the new trailer seems very different in tone, to the point where Pike actually looks at Number One (his first officer) and confidentially notes, "I love this job."
What unfolds is an interesting combination of scope and character moments, all of them lookiong quite promising and allowing Strange New Worlds to stand apart from the other shows in this new age of Star Trek. And anyone looking for a more hopeful view of the future as postulated by TOS and Star Trek: The Next Generation, the narration of the last trailer noted, "No matter how many stars there are in the sky, no matter how many galaxies swirl beyond our own; no matter what the mathematical probablilities or the number of times we say we are not alone in the universe, our first visit from the stars is always the province of children's strories and science fiction. And then one day ... it isn't." The new footage showcases this nicely.
Beyond Mount as Christopher Pike, the show stars Rebecca Romijn as Number One, the ship's first officer and whose real name is Una Chin-riley; Ethan Peck as science officer Mr. Spock; Babs Olusanmokun as Doctor M'Benga, Christina Chong as L'an Noonian-Singh, genetically connected to Khan Noonian Singh; Celia Rose as the third actress to play Nyota Uhura (following Nichelle Nichols and Zoe Saldana), Jess Bush as Nurse Christine Chapel (Majel Barrett on the original); and Bruce Horak as Hemmer, part of the Aenar race which is a subspecies of the Andorians.
Look for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds to start streaming this May on Paramount+.
