Back in September, the actress expressed her feelings about becoming a part of the project, enthusing, "I am thrilled and honored to say that I will be playing Cadet Nyota Uhura. I am so excited to be stepping into this legacy."

Born February 22, 2000 in New York City, Celia made her debut on Broadway at the age of 20, playing the role of Mary Frances "Frankie" Healy in the rock musical Jagged Little Pill. For the part, she was nominated for a Tony Award in the category of Best Actress in a Featured Role in a Musical, and a 2021 Grammy Award in the category of Best Musical Theater Album.

During her high school years she immersed herself in various musical theater productions. She actually got involved with Jagged Little Pill at age 17 in what was a 29-hour reading of the original musical. A year later she was in the show's lab and featured in the show's Cambridge, Massachusetts premiere at the American Repertory Theatre. This was followed by Broadway in 2019.

She sang on a number of television shows, such as Good Morning America, Tamron Hall, Today, Take Me to the World: A Sondheim 90th Birthday Celebration and the 74th Tony Awards

Celia is, of course, preceded in the role of Uhura by Nichelle Nichols, who essayed the part on The Original Series, the Animated Series and six feature films; and Zoe Saldana, who has so far played Uhura in three films with a possible fourth on the way.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds begins streaming on Paramount+ on May 5.

I am not sure about this casting. She may be a great actress but she comes across as too much of a departure from Nichelle Nicoles.

@Forthas - I agree, and I'm sure YOU probably didn't want to say it. But she looks kind of "old" for her age. She might be one of those people that will look like that when she's in her 70's, those types that look older when they're young but when they get old they look much younger.

@Blastaar - I think if they are going to recast the main cast, then go all the way and remake every episode and update it with today's special effects.
