With the highly anticipated Firefly announcement coming tomorrow, fans are abuzz with what it could be. Over the past week, Nathan Fillion has been posting videos to his account, assembling the crew of the Serenity for a mysterious new project.
The cryptic teasers have sparked a ton of speculation among the passionate fanbase, but an official announcement is slated for Sunday, March 15th. With so much anticipation building toward the reveal, Fillion has already confirmed that it won't be a convention, podcast, or cross-over. So what could it be?
While our question will hopefully be answered tomorrow, an intriguing post from Lee Stringer has sparked all-new speculation. For those unfamiliar, Stringer is a longtime visual effects artist who contributed to the visual effects of the original Firefly series and its 2005 feature film Serenity.
Working at Zoic Studios, he helped bring the ship’s digital representation to life and contributed to the visual aesthetic used for many of the series’ space sequences. Zoic Studios was responsible for Firefly’s signature space shots, using a handheld, documentary-style approach that made the spacecraft scenes feel surprisingly real and grounded.
On Thursday, Stringer took to Facebook and shared a stylized image of Serenity with the caption, "Hmmm..."
It’s unclear if Stringer’s actually involved in this Firefly announcement, but his post has sparked a theory that it could be an animated series, with the original cast returning to voice their characters. It seems more likely, though, that he’s just sharing his thoughts and excitement rather than any insider info.
Thankfully, we don't have to wait too much longer for answers. The special announcement is scheduled to take place this weekend on Sunday, March 15th. Presumably, the announcement will be made on the Once We Were Spacemen Instagram account, where all of the teaser videos have been posted over the past month.
Firefly is a cult-favorite sci-fi series created by Joss Whedon that originally aired in 2002. The show ran for just a single season of 14 episodes before being canceled, but it quickly developed a devoted fanbase thanks to its unique blend of space-western adventure, witty dialogue, and memorable characters. Now widely regarded as a cult classic, the franchise has endured through its 2005 feature film Serenity, comic books, and ongoing fan projects.
Be sure to check back tomorrow throughout the day as we wait on what this announcement could be.
