Stranger Things fans thirsty for some supernatural drama since the show's ending will finally get their fix next month with the debut of The Boroughs. Executive produced by The Duffer Brothers, The Boroughs is a new supernatural series from creators Jeffrey Addis and Will Matthew (The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance).

This week, Netflix debuted the trailer for The Boroughs, setting the stage for what may just be the streamer's next big sci-fi series.

“From the beginning, we knew we wanted The Boroughs to feel equal parts scary, mysterious, exciting and emotional,” Addiss and Matthews told Tudum. “The challenge was to create a world that could hold all of these different tones at once. Which is why it was so fun to work with the Duffer Brothers — the masters of balancing heart and horror.”

Indeed, the trailer for The Boroughs has all the makings of an intriguing supernatural mystery. The series is set in a rural town located in the New Mexico desert, specifically a seemingly perfect retirement community. But not all is as it seems; there's some sort of dark secret lurking beneath the town and it's up to a misfit crew of unlikely heroes to uncover the mystery.

The official synopsis teases: "In a seemingly perfect retirement community, a grieving newcomer’s monstrous encounter inspires him to join a misfit crew of unlikely heroes who uncover a dark secret that proves their “golden years” are more dangerous, and they are more formidable, than anyone expects."

Yes, the description for The Boroughs sounds like a new chapter of Stranger Things and, admittedly, the trailer does give off some similar vibes, only now our heroes aren't kids, but retirees in their golden years.

“While the heroes in The Boroughs have a few more years on them than the kids from Stranger Things, they are a similarly lovable bunch of misfits, and we can’t wait for you to join them on an adventure that is at turns scary, funny, and deeply touching," The Duffer Brothers said.

The Boroughs features stars incredible cast that includes Alfred Molina (Spider-Man: No Way Home), Geena Davis (Thelma and Louise), Alfre Woodard (Clemency), Denis O'Hare (This Is Us), Clarke Peters (The Wire), BIll Pullman (Independence Day), Jena Malone (Love Lies Bleeding), and Carlos Miranda (Station 19).

“At its core, this is a story about belonging and growing up — no matter your age — filled with adventure, wonder, comedy, scares, and tears," the Duffer Brothers previously said of the series. "And most importantly, you’re going to fall in love with these characters. Watching legends like Alfred Molina, Geena Davis, Alfre Woodard, Clarke Peters, Denis O’Hare, and Bill Pullman bring them to life was genuinely magical. The monsters are very cool — but it’s the characters who will stay with you.”

While Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews are the creators and showrunners of The Boroughs, they workd closedly with the Duffer Brothers, calling it a "dream come true."

“They bring the perfect balance of heart and horror to our story. We can’t wait for audiences around the world to unlock the dark mystery buried beneath the sunny facade of The Boroughs,” they said.

The Boroughs will premiere on Netflix on May 21st. All eight episodes of Season 1 will drop at once.
