Earlier today, the review embargo for The Little Mermaid finally lifted. With the release date fast approaching, many fans on social media started expressing concerns that critics had been stopped from sharing their verdicts until right before the movie's arrival in theaters.

After all, that's a guaranteed sign that a newly released title isn't really very good.

Thankfully, that's not the case for The Little Mermaid after all, something which is evident from its current 71% Rotten Tomatoes score (first reported on Toonado.com). That's been generated after a total of 75 reviews have been counted and, if it can gain an additional 4% in the days ahead, it will soon be "Certified Fresh."

The current Critics Consensus reads, "With Halle Bailey making a major splash in the title role, Disney's live-action Little Mermaid ranks among the studio's most enjoyable reimaginings."

Will you be heading to theaters this weekend to watch The Little Mermaid

In The Little Mermaid, the youngest of King Triton’s daughters, and the most defiant, Ariel longs to find out more about the world beyond the sea, and while visiting the surface, falls for the dashing Prince Eric. While mermaids are forbidden to interact with humans, Ariel must follow her heart.

She makes a deal with the evil sea witch, Ursula, which gives her a chance to experience life on land, but ultimately places her life – and her father’s crown – in jeopardy.

The Little Mermaid stars singer and actress Halle Bailey as Ariel, Daveed Diggs as the voice of Sebastian, Jacob Tremblay as the voice of Flounder, Awkwafina as the voice of Scuttle, Jonah Hauer-King as Prince Eric, Art Malik as Sir Grimsby, Noma Dumezweni as Queen Selina, with Javier Bardem as King Triton, and Melissa McCarthy as Ursula.

Helmed by filmmaker Rob Marshall, the movie opens in theaters on May 26, 2023.
