"Foul tarnished, in search of the Elden Ring. Emboldened by the flame of ambition. Someone must extinguish thy flame. Let it be Margit the Fell!"
A24, the acclaimed studio behind Ex Machina, Moonlight, Midsommar, Everything Everywhere All at Once, and more—is reportedly developing a film adaptation of Elden Ring, the award-winning 2022 action RPG from Japanese developer FromSoftware.
The rumor was first posted by Nexus Point News and then corroborated by Jeff Sneider.
Interestingly, the original report from Nexus Point News is no longer available on their site, a move that often means A24's lawyers may have reached out.
MovieWeb is also confirming the news, as a third source.
Adding to the excitement, the report indicates A24 is eyeing acclaimed director Alex Garland (known for Ex Machina, Annihilation, and Warfare) to helm the Elden Ring adaptation.
This news arrives at an opportune time as FromSoftware is preparing to launch an Elden Ring spin-off game, following the original's monumental success. The original title sold over 30 million units worldwide, making it Bandai Namco's fastest-selling game and surpassing the entire Dark Souls franchise in sales.
In the Lands Between, once blessed by the Elden Ring and Erdtree (established by the outer god Greater Will through Queen Marika), a cataclysm called The Shattering fractured the Ring. Marika's demigod offspring now war over its shards, the Great Runes. Exiled beings called the Tarnished, including the player, are summoned back to gather the Runes, repair the Elden Ring, and become the new Elden Lord.
What set Elden Ring apart was its vast, seamless open world—the Lands Between—which broke from the more linear or segmented designs of previous FromSoftware titles. From the very beginning, players are given an unprecedented level of liberty to explore in nearly any direction, creating a truly open-ended adventure.
Elden Ring director Hidetaka Miyazaki previously addressed the possibility of movie or television adaptation back in 2024, stating, "I don’t see any reason to deny another interpretation or adaptation of Elden Ring, a movie for example, but I don’t think myself, or FromSoftware, have the knowledge or ability to produce something in a different medium."
"So that’s where a very strong partner would come into play. We’d have to build a lot of trust and agreement on whatever it is we’re trying to achieve, but we have interest, for sure."
In light of the latest news, it's quite possible Miyazaki anticipated this union. When considering Hollywood studios capable of capturing FromSoftware's unique and enigmatic vision, A24 stands out as a particularly harmonious match.
