Star Trek: Discovery's fifth and final season will officially debut on Thursday, April 4. Paramount confirmed the season will kick off with a two-episode premiere, with new episodes released weekly on Thursdays.

We still haven't seen a proper trailer for the upcoming season, but Paramount has released a few exclusive sneak peeks. Season 5 has been described as "pure adventure" from beginning to end as Captain Burnham and the crew of the U.S.S. Discovery "uncover a mystery that sends them on an epic adventure across the galaxy to find an ancient power whose very existence has been deliberately hidden for centuries."

"But there are others on the hunt as well," the synopsis teases, "dangerous foes who are desperate to claim the prize for themselves and will stop at nothing to get it."

One of these dangerous enemies is L'ak, played by Canadian actor Elias Toufexis. A recent exclusive clip from the season teased a moment in the first episode, titled "Red Directive," in which we see L'ak and his partner Moll (Eve Harlow) come face-to-face with Captain Burnham aboard an 800-year-old Romulan vessel hunting for a hidden artifact.

Giving us a taste of the sort of action and adventure we can expect to see from the season, an explosive blasts a hole in the ship and sends Burnham flying into space. After activating a suit, she manages to hop aboard the enemy ship as it launches into warp speed.

Although Star Trek: Discovery has been a mixed bag with fans, critics have reviewed the series with critical acclaim. The series sits at an 85% on Rotten Tomatoes with critics, but just 37% with the general audience.

Season 4 was among the more well-received, scoring 88% with critics. The Critics Consensus reads: "Michael Burnham finally comes into her own -- and so does Discovery -- in a confident fourth season that embraces the series' more heartfelt take on the Star Trek mythos."

Star Trek: Discovery definitely took some bold creative leaps that didn't always land with fans but as the first Star Trek series since Star Trek: Enterprise ended in 2005, a five-season run can only be viewed as a success.

Looking ahead, we've still got Season 5 of Star Trek: Lower Decks as well as Season 3 of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds coming. Meanwhile, the second season Star Trek: Prodigy will debut on Netflix sometime this year after the animated series was canceled by Paramount+ and shopped around to other streaming services.
