The first season of Apple TV's world-building sci-fi drama Silo came to a stunning conclusion this week and while we finally got to see what the outside world looks like, the revelation of what lies beyond the underground silo raised even more questions. These are questions that will hopefully be answered in season 2 of the series, which Apple TV confirmed earlier this month.
With the ongoing writers' strike and Apple's penchant for making us wait years between seasons, many were concerned we'd be waiting a while before we return to the dystopian world of Silo. Thankfully, that will not be the case.
On the official Silo Facebook fan page, series author Hugh Howey was asked when Season 2 will release. While he didn't give a specific date, he did confirm that the next season will arrive sometime in 2024.
Howey, who wrote the Wool book series on which Silo is based, further explained that the second season was already written before the first season was even so released. This has allowed for the filming of the second season to already begin. Apple was likely waiting for viewer stats before officially announcing the series' renewal.
Silo is set in a dystopian where a community of 10,000 survivors lives in a giant underground silo that they believe exists to protect them from the inhabitable outside world. They don't know who built the silo, nor do they know when it will be safe to go outside. The only view of the world beyond the silo is through a single camera which is occasionally cleaned by those who declare they want to "go out." Naturally, all of these secrets lead to questions and conspiracies. And those who seek the truth typically face fatal consequences.
Silo follows Juliette Nichols, an engineer who unexpectedly becomes the new sheriff of the silo. Seeking answers about a loved one's murder, she "tumbles onto a mystery that goes far deeper than she could have ever imagined, leading her to discover that if the lies don't kill you, the truth will."
Although we now know some of the truth surrounding the Silo and the world outside, there are still plenty of questions that we can't wait to have answered.
Silo is currently streaming on Apple TV+. The first season has received critical acclaim and currently sits at an 88% on Rotten Tomatoes. The critics consensus reads: "With deft writing, awe-inspiring production design and the inestimable star power of Rebecca Ferguson, Silo is a mystery box well worth opening."
